In this article we provide some key recommendations about data acquisition in order to maximize the outputs from delair.ai.

Overlap Recommendations for Drone Mapping

In order to process efficiently aerial images into orthophotos, DSMs, and run subsequent analytics, it is strongly advised to plan flights with sufficient overlaps between adjacent images.

1. General Purpose RGB Mapping

If you run a RGB sensor :

  • Recommended standard forward overlap is 80%
  • Recommended standard side overlap is 60%

It is not necessary to exceed 90% for each overlap.

2. Agriculture & Forestry Multispectral Mapping

If you run a multispectral sensor :

  • Recommended standard forward overlap is 80%
  • Recommended standard side overlap is 80%

It is not necessary to exceed 90% for each overlap.

3. Power&Utilities Thermal Mapping

Photovoltaic Plants Surveying using a VTOL/rotorcraft drone

In order to run Thermal Mapping and Automated Hot Spot Detections over solar plants, recommended flight practices are to maintain both high overlap and a moderate altitude.

As an example, for a DJI Inspire drone carrying a FLIR Tau 2 radiometric 640x480 thermal sensor with a 19 mm lens

  • Recommended standard forward overlap 80%
  • Recommended standard side overlap 60 %
  • Recommended standard flight height : 35 m ~ 115 ft AGL

This will enable to attain the expected thermal GSD required to process for hot spot automated detections among faulty photovoltaic arrays with reliability and accuracy.

Is it required to acquire RGB data simultaneously ?

In order to build the initial thermal map in a new project, both RGB and LWIR data will have to be acquired for the photogrammetry purpose. For later surveys (change monitoring over same site) flying only for the thermal data acquisition would be sufficient on most occasions.
